Saudi Arabia and China join forces to develop AI system based on Arabic.

The King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) in Saudi Arabia has joined forces with two Chinese universities to develop an artificial intelligence (AI) system focused on the Arabic language. This collaboration has resulted in the creation of a large language model (LLM) known as AceGPT, which is built on Meta’s LlaMA2. The project was spearheaded by a Chinese-American professor at KAUST in partnership with the School of Data Science at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen (CUHKSZ), and the Shenzhen Research Institute of Big Data (SRIBD).

Announced on the project’s GitHub page, AceGPT is designed to function as an AI assistant for Arabic speakers, capable of providing answers to queries in Arabic. However, the developers cautioned that it may not yield satisfactory results in other languages. The model has also been enhanced to detect and prevent possible forms of misuse, which include mishandling sensitive information, generating harmful content, spreading misinformation, or failing safety checks.
